Complete Guide to Cropping Images

Learn how to crop images for Instagram, YouTube thumbnails, LinkedIn banners, and profile avatars — including circular crops with transparent backgrounds.

Cropping is compositional surgery. A good crop makes an average photo look intentional; a bad one clips heads, breaks the horizon, or ruins the subject. This guide covers the aspect ratios you actually need and how to crop for each platform.

Aspect ratios cheat-sheet

  • 1:1 — Instagram feed, profile avatars, product tiles.
  • 4:5 — Instagram portrait posts (maximum vertical real estate in the feed).
  • 9:16 — TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, stories.
  • 16:9 — YouTube thumbnails, hero banners, widescreen photos.
  • 3:2 — Standard DSLR aspect ratio, print-friendly.
  • 1.91:1 — Facebook and LinkedIn link previews (Open Graph).
  • 3:1 — LinkedIn banner, Twitter/X header (approx).

Rule of thirds and the safe zone

When cropping, imagine a 3×3 grid over the image. Place the subject's eyes on the top horizontal line and their body along a vertical line for a natural composition. Leave some breathing room around the subject — a crop that hugs a face too tight always looks amateurish.

Circular crop for avatars

Every platform (Slack, Discord, Twitter/X, LinkedIn) displays profile pictures as circles, but they all upload as squares and mask on their end. If you need a genuine transparent circular cutout — for a website team page, an app UI, or an email signature — use the Circle crop option. It exports a transparent PNG with only the circular region visible.

Step-by-step crop

  1. Open the Crop tool and upload your image.
  2. Pick an aspect ratio (or Free-form for a manual crop).
  3. Drag the corners of the crop box to frame your subject.
  4. For circular avatars, switch to Circle mode.
  5. Download the cropped result.
