Best YouTube Thumbnail Size
The correct YouTube thumbnail size in 2026 — dimensions, aspect ratio, file size limits, and design tips that drive click-through rate.
YouTube has settled on one thumbnail spec that works everywhere — desktop, mobile, TV, and embeds. If you get this wrong, YouTube crops or downscales your image and click-through rate suffers.
The official YouTube thumbnail size
- Resolution: 1280 × 720 pixels
- Aspect ratio: 16:9
- Minimum width: 640 pixels
- Max file size: 2 MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP
Why 1280×720 and not larger?
1280×720 is the sweet spot: sharp on mobile, TV, and the giant player, without wasting bandwidth. Uploading 4K thumbnails does nothing — YouTube downscales them.
Design rules that raise CTR
- Keep faces and text away from the bottom-right corner — the duration badge covers it.
- Use 3–5 words maximum, at least 60 px tall.
- High contrast beats color theory — bright subject on dark background pops in the feed.
- Test on mobile first: 80% of YouTube viewing is mobile.
How to resize any image to a YouTube thumbnail
- Open the YouTube thumbnail resizer.
- Drop your image — it snaps to 1280×720.
- Adjust the crop so the subject sits above the timestamp area.
- Download the JPG (under 2 MB) and upload to YouTube Studio.
